Edmonton summers are short and beautiful — but Alberta summers come with real health risks. Check these before heading outside. Conditions can change fast.
Alberta's summer UV is intense — higher elevation and long sunny days push UV into the high and very high range regularly. UV 3–5 is moderate, 6–7 high, 8+ very high. Wear sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat on any day above UV 5. Children and fair-skinned individuals should cover up even on cloudy days.

The AQHI runs from 1 to 10. Below 3 is low risk — go about your day. 4–6 is moderate — at-risk people should reduce strenuous outdoor activity. 7 and above is high risk — limit time outside, especially for children, elderly residents, and anyone with asthma, heart or lung conditions. During wildfire season, the AQHI can jump from 3 to 10+ within hours with no warning. Check it daily in summer.

Alberta wildfire season runs May through September. Fire bans — covering campfires, fire pits, and fireworks — can be declared across the province with little notice. If you smell smoke or skies turn hazy, check the fire map immediately. Violating a fire ban carries significant fines. Always check before lighting any outdoor fire.
